Installation Instructions
Before you attempt a wiring harness installation, you must unhook the wind machine battery and turn the Manual-Off-Auto switch to the OFF position.
Step 1.
To use the 454 harness on a 350 engine, you will need to modify the harness in order to pickup RPM. The gist of the modification is that the 454 harness has an RPM filter built into the harness. This RPM filter will block RPM signals from the 350 engine, so it needs to be routed around with a wire.
First, locate the green wire inside the cable loom on the 12pin connector side of the harness. Cut this wire as close to the shrink tubing as possible. Strip the wire end 1/4".
Second, locate the purple wire on the other side of the shrink tube and cut it off as close to the shrink tube as possible. Strip the wire end 1/4".
Third, join the green and purple wires with a butt connector, ideally one that heat seals.
Now the harness is ready for install.
Step 2
Disconnect the wind machine engine’s 12V battery.
Step 3
Connect the black ground wire to a ground source on the engine. Other ground wires are usually green or black.
Step 4
Connect the red wire to the bottom-middle contact of the MAN-OFF-AUTO switch on the wind machine gauge panel. You will need to remove the switch with a crescent wrench.
Step 5
Connect the brown wire to the bottom-left contact of the MAN-OFF-AUTO switch on the wind machine gauge panel. You will need to remove the switch with a crescent wrench.
Step 6
Replace the black wire from the Orchard Rite temperature probe with the blue wire from the harness.
HINT: Follow the temperature probe wire to the terminal block on the gauge panel to find the correct wires.
Step 7
Replace red wire from the Orchard Rite temperature probe with orange wire from the harness.
HINT: Follow the temperature probe wire to the terminal block on the gauge panel to find the correct wires.
Step 8
Locate the 350's RPM sensor on the bottom of the bell housing of the machine. We will be tying the purple wire we prepared in step 1 to the white wire labeled as Signal, 0-5V. See below for a reference.
Cut the signal wire a 12 inches or so from the sensor. Strip both ends and button connect them together on one side of a button connector. On the other side of the button connector splice in the purple wire.
Step 9
Reattach the wind machine battery.
Step 10
Connect the new wiring harness to the Altrac Station via the 12-pin connector on the control line.
HINT: You should tuck the connector up under the wind machine hood when you are finished installing to maximize weather protection.
Step 11
Connect the temperature probe and any other sensors to the appropriate connections.
Step 12
To run the wind machine you must have the Manual-Off-Auto switch in the ‘Auto’ position, and the autostart must be armed. You will see a blinking white light when the autostart is armed.
